What is Acupressure?
Acupressure
is an
Asian system of healing that utilizes points on the body derived from
traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.
From the eastern traditions, Chi (China)/Ki (Japan)/Prana(India) is the
life energy that circulates and permeates throughout all living organisms.
In humans, it is the all-pervasive energy that keeps us living, energized
and keeps all bodily functions healthy and moving.
When this energy becomes stagnant due to internal and external causes,
pain, disease and discomfort exists. Optimal
health is achieved by keeping this energy moving and flowing prior to
stagnation.
Acupressure uses
light touch along "pressure points" or "tsubo" that appear on or near
the surface of the skin and can be manipulated with various degrees of pressure
to stimulate or release blocked energy or to calm over stimulated energy. 12 organ meridians (Lung/Large Intestine, Stomach/Spleen,
Heart/Small Intestine, Bladder/Kidney, Pericardium (heart lining)/Triple Warmer,
Gall Bladder/Liver, and two "extra" meridians (the Conception Vessel and
the Governing Vessel) are the vehicles/channels/vessels where the "life
energy" is passed. The pairing of
organ meridians is due to their Yin/Yang, female/male, upward/downward,
negative/positive energy relationship. This
relationship and fluid connection to the next pairing reflects the continuous
pathway for which prana/chi/ki may pass. Stagnation
in one area may be influenced by a meridian causing symptoms in another
meridian. By opening these
meridians/channels/vessels, a continuous flow of "life energy" can
enthusiastically flow, keeping the client healthy, alert and prosperous. Sessions are scheduled hourly where the client is fully clothed and lying on a massage table. This form of treatment is quite subtle yet deeply effective. Since we are working on an energetic level, muscular deep pressure is not necessary. Those accustomed to deep tissue massage may find Acupressure treatments initially not as satisfying due to its subtle touch but over time, would find the treatments quite effective. If physical pressure is preferred, Shiatsu treatments might be more to your liking. |
