What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda (pronounced "eye-yur-vay-da")
literally translates as the "Science of Life."
It is the traditional health care system of India originating
approximately 5,000 years ago and is considered by many to be the mother
of all medicine. The foundation of Ayurveda is the five great elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The elements combine to form the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The qualities of the five elements represent how things are categorized, for example, a very heavy moist food would be said to contain a lot of earth and water (Kapha). The goal of Ayurveda is to return us to harmonious balance and awaken our inner knowing that exists between our environment and our soul. Ayurveda views illness and disease as a natural end result of living out of balance/harmony with nature. An Ayurvedic practitioner examines the whole person to understand the health of their physical, mental and spiritual bodies in order to determine their client’s true nature or constitution. Symptoms, our natural warning signals, are analyzed to determine the exact nature of the disturbances. The treatment plan is then tailored for the client according to their particular constitution and state of imbalance. Our focus is to bring balance (health) back to our client by removing the cause of the illness or disease at its root. Therapies can include: herbs, diet, lifestyle adjustments, exercise, aroma therapy, color therapy, etc.
